What can you do?

Many people think that they can't do anything about global warming, but there are many things you can do in your daily life to help out the Earth!
Here are just a few:
  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. By purchasing products that are reusable, you can help reduce waste. Another way to reduce our waste is to recycle. By recycling plastics, paper, and other scraps, you can reduce our carbon dioxide emissions.
  2. If you use heating and air conditioning in your house, you can use it less. You can do so by either leaving it off more often or by lowering the heat in your house a few degrees or by increasing the temperature of your air conditioning a few degrees. Also, you can turn it off when you're not home. This will help with those bills as well!
  3. Use more CFL lightbulbs!
  4. Drive less and carpool more
  5. Choose to purchase energy efficient products, such as a car with good gas mileage.
  6. Use less hot water
  7. Turn off your lights when you're not in the room or you're not using them
  8. PLANT A TREE!
  9. Get a report card from your utility company. This will help you be aware of just how much energy you are consuming.
  10. After you have done all this (or at least tried a little bit) encourage others! The more people who are doing some or all of this, the more we, as a planet, are helping.
Basically, we humans need to conserve more energy. If the incentive of helping out our planet is not good enough for you, think about your bills! Conserving energy will also decrease how much you are paying for bills. Most of these are simple daily tasks that won't be too hard to do. Please take some initiative and prevent some disastrous events.

What are the effects of Global Warming?

There are many potential effects if Global Warming gets too out of hand. The effects could be dire and may mean a different future for the Earth.

Some present effects:
  • The global average sea level has increased
  • Ocean heat content has increased
  • Snow cover and ice extent has decreased
  • Birds are laying their eggs earlier
  • Plants are flowering earlier
  • Some mammals are coming out of hibernation earlier
  • Some species have moved farther north
  • Precipitation has increased globally
Some potential future effects:
  • Some of the ice cover will melt in Greenland and Antarctica which will cause a rise in sea level
    • Plants and animals will probably not be able to adapt to this change as quickly as would be needed
    • Also, the rising sea level could pollute freshwater with salt water
  • Reservoirs could dry up
  • There will be more heat-related illnesses and the malaria mosquito would be able to travel to places that are currently too cold for it to survive
  • There will be more extreme whether, such as storms, floods, and droughts
  • Species that rely on one another may fall out of sync
  • Ecosystems will change
These are scary futures and although some of them may be inevitable, there are still others that we can help. If these potential impacts scare you, then do something!

What are the causes of Global Warming?

There are many potential causes of Global Warming, some are natural causes and others are manmade.

Some natural causes:
  • The release of methane gas from artic tundras and wetlands
    • Greenhouse gases such as methane gas cause heat to build up in the Earth's atmosphere
  • The Earth experiences a cycle of climate change every 40,000 years
Some manmade causes:
  • Burning fossil fuels (which causes pollution)
    • When fossil fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas
  • Mining coal and oil release methane gas
  • The large population means the need for more food and more transportation
    • More food means more livestock which means more methane being released into the atmosphere
      • Also, manure contains methane
    • More transportation means more cars which means more fossil fuels are being burned up to fuel our cars
    • Also, the greater the population means there are more people exhaling carbon dioxide
  • Many of the trees that would be taking up this carbon dioxide to use for photosynthesis are being cut down so we now have an excess amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
As you can see, the manmade causes far outweigh the natural causes, and they are also more dangerous. If more people were to recognize this problem and realize we are taking advantage of our limited resources, we could greatly help this Earth. People should be aware of the causes of global warming in order to see and prevent this problem from developing further.

Hello!

Welcome to my blog on Global Warming! I believe that this is a prevalent issue in our world, even though some people choose to deny it. Global Warming is an epidemic where the temperature of the Earth continues to rise. It is not only evident in the rising temperatures, but extreme weather conditions show that the climate is not okay.
Take this week for example. It's not normal for the weather to be in the high 70s and low 80s in mid-March. While some of you may be excited for the warm weather, I am also worried. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the warmth and taste of spring too, but it shows an unusual pattern for the Earth. Save our Earth!
